Abisme Crater

Ladoga Lacus

Urmia Lacus and Sionascaig Lacus

Vid Flumina Named

The IAU Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature has approved the name Vid Flumina for a channel on Titan. For more information, see the IAU Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature.

Note: Vid Flumina are a series of channels named after a broad river in Norse mythology of the ice-cold poisonous Elivagar system.

Seven Lacuna Names Approved for Use on Titan

Seven names with the descriptor term lacuna have been approved for use on Titan. For more information, see the list of Titan lacunae and the map of the north polar region of Titan in the Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature.

Note: The official definition of a lacuna (pl., lacunae) is an "Irregularly shaped depression on Titan having the appearance of a dry lake bed." The seven new lacunae are: Atacama Lacuna, Eyre Lacuna, Jerid Lacuna, Melrhir Lacuna, Ngami Lacuna, Racetrack Lacuna and Uyuni Lacuna.

Large Ringed Feature on Titan Named Paxsi

A large ringed feature on Titan located at 5.0N, 341.2W has been named Paxsi. For more information, see the feature page and the image of Titan in the Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature.

Notes: Paxsi is the goddess of the moon, education and knowledge for the Aymara people, who live in Peru, Bolivia, and Chile. The Paxsi feature is located in the Aaru region of Titan.

Ten New Lacus Named on Titan

Ten names with the descriptor term lacus have been approved for use on Titan. For more information, see the list of Titan feature names and the map of the north polar region of Titan in the Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature.

Notes: The ten newly named lakes are (in alphabetical order): Albano Lacus, Atitlán Lacus, Cayuga Lacus, Junín Lacus, Lanao Lacus, Logtak Lacus, Ohrid Lacus, Sevan Lacus, Uvs Lacus, and Vänern Lacus. All names were approved on September 16, 2010. There are now a total of 24 named lakes on Titan.

Thirteen New Names for Features on Rhea

Thirteen new names have been approved for features on Rhea, including 1 crater, 5 catenae, 5 chasmata, and 2 fossae. The descriptor terms and spellings of 2 approved names have also been changed; Kun Lun Chasma was changed to Kunlun Linea, and Pu Chou Chasma was changed to Puchou Catenae.
